Political trust, investment and advanced technologies mark a new stage in the strategic partnership.

TASHKENT, UZBEKISTAN, October 20, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Samarkand dialogue held on October 19, 2026, marked an important opportunity to strengthen Uzbekistan–U.S. relations and expand cooperation between the United States and Central Asia. The participation of Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio underscored the strategic importance of bilateral ties, with discussions focusing on trade, investment, industrial development, critical minerals, financial markets and advanced technologies.

The dialogue highlighted Uzbekistan’s growing role as a reliable international partner and a key link between Central Asia and global markets.

From Political Dialogue to Economic Results

A central priority in bilateral relations is translating political engagement into practical economic outcomes. The development of the Uzbekistan–U.S. Business and Investment Council is an important step towards strengthening direct contacts between governments, financial institutions and private-sector representatives, facilitating investment and addressing business challenges.

A total of 54 agreements and initiatives worth nearly $12 billion have been reported in connection with bilateral engagement. These initiatives reflect growing commercial interest and the potential to develop long-term partnerships.

For Uzbekistan, cooperation with the United States offers opportunities to attract capital, introduce advanced technologies and develop higher-value industries. American businesses, in turn, can access Uzbekistan’s expanding market and explore opportunities across Central Asia.

Trade and Investment on the Rise

Bilateral trade has grown significantly, increasing from approximately $215 million in 2017 to nearly $1 billion in 2025—around 4.7 times higher.

The positive trend continued in 2026. During the first eight months, bilateral trade reached $810.4 million, a 33.4 per cent increase compared with the same period in 2025. Uzbekistan’s exports to the United States amounted to $304.5 million, up 59.9 per cent, while imports from the United States totalled approximately $506 million, an increase of 21.3 per cent.

Further growth is possible in manufacturing, agriculture, energy, transport and information technology, where both countries can benefit from complementary capabilities.

Investment is another important pillar of the partnership. As of September 1, 2026, 377 companies with U.S. investment were operating in Uzbekistan. Between 2017 and 2025, the country attracted more than $2.9 billion in U.S. direct investment and loans.

These figures reflect expanding business engagement and the opportunities associated with Uzbekistan’s economic reforms, market development and efforts to improve the investment climate.

Financial Markets and Strategic Industries

The planned initial public offering of Uzbekistan’s National Investment Fund, valued at approximately $700 million, represents another step towards developing capital markets and attracting international investors.

The fund consolidates stakes in 13 state-owned enterprises, with international investment management company Franklin Templeton involved in its management. The initiative aims to strengthen corporate governance, improve transparency and promote more efficient asset management. Its success will depend on consistent implementation and sustained investor confidence.

Cooperation is also expanding into strategic industries, including critical minerals, advanced technologies, innovation and space-related activities.

Uzbekistan’s natural resources and geographical position create opportunities to develop mineral processing and supply chains for modern industries. For the United States, such cooperation can help diversify supply sources; for Uzbekistan, it offers the prospect of moving beyond raw-material exports towards higher-value production.

Technology partnerships can support industrial modernisation, digitalisation, skills development and the integration of Uzbek businesses into international value chains.

Uzbekistan’s accession to the Artemis Accords as the 77th signatory further demonstrates its interest in international cooperation on the peaceful exploration and use of outer space, creating potential opportunities for scientific exchange and technological development.

Strengthening Central Asia’s Global Position

The Uzbekistan–U.S. partnership also has a broader regional dimension. Improved connectivity, trade facilitation, infrastructure development and diversified economic partnerships are essential to Central Asia’s long-term prosperity.

Uzbekistan’s efforts to strengthen relations with neighbouring countries and expand international economic links can complement deeper engagement with the United States. Investment and commercial cooperation can support cross-border business activities, open new markets and strengthen the region’s integration into the global economy.

For international partners, a more connected and economically dynamic Central Asia offers opportunities for trade and investment. For regional countries, broader partnerships can diversify economic relations and support sustainable development.

The Samarkand dialogue therefore represents more than a diplomatic meeting: it provides a platform for advancing regional cooperation and strengthening Central Asia’s role in international economic relations.

Turning Commitments into Sustainable Results

The development of Uzbekistan–U.S. relations demonstrates a growing shift from political dialogue towards practical cooperation. Rising trade, expanding investment, new financial instruments and engagement in strategic industries provide a foundation for further progress.

The key indicators underline this potential: bilateral trade approached $1 billion in 2025; trade reached $810.4 million in the first eight months of 2026; 377 companies with U.S. investment operated in Uzbekistan as of September 1, 2026; and U.S. direct investment and loans attracted between 2017 and 2025 exceeded $2.9 billion. In addition, 54 agreements and initiatives valued at nearly $12 billion and the planned $700 million National Investment Fund IPO highlight the scale of economic ambitions.

Realising these opportunities will require transparent institutions, consistent reforms, effective implementation of agreements and stronger links between businesses.

By building on the momentum generated in Samarkand, Uzbekistan and the United States can deepen their strategic partnership, expand mutually beneficial economic cooperation and create new opportunities for investors, businesses and people across both countries and the wider Central Asian region.
