Houston-based software retailer offers upgrade discounts, backups and priority install support as Microsoft ends Office 2021 security updates.

End of support doesn't break Office 2021 overnight, but it changes the math for everyone who bought it to avoid a subscription”
— Colton Wiles, founder and CEO of SoftwareCW
HOUSTON, TX, UNITED STATES, October 20, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Microsoft's support for Office 2021 just ended on October 13th 2026. This date impacted households, freelancers and small businesses who had gone with the perpetual licence version of Office to avoid the subscription model. It came a year after Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14th 2025. The two dates together have extended the software refresh cycle well into 2027.

Office 2021 End of Support Joins the Windows 10 Transition
Office 2021 will continue to work on your device past its end of support date but will no longer receive security updates. Office 2024 is supported on Windows 11 until October 2029. Windows 10 devices enrolled in Microsoft's consumer Extended Security Updates program will get critical security updates until 12th October 2027.

Many older machines have not yet made the move. StatCounter data shows Windows 10 still ran on 19.25 percent of U.S. desktop Windows PCs in June 2026, roughly one in five machines, eight months after its support ended.

Upgrade Decisions Shift From Product Choice to Ongoing Help
For those of us buying Office 2021, the issue is really one of logistics rather than features. The choice is essentially between a one-off purchase of Office 2024 and a Microsoft 365 subscription. Many of the buyers are also replacing their hardware, so they'll be reinstalling and reactivating the software on their new PCs.

SoftwareCW points out that the resale market for downloadable software also encompasses cracked software, previously used activation codes, and unlicensed keys. These can fail at activation or simply stop working at a later date, with the purchaser having no recourse whatsoever.

Texas Small Businesses Face the Same Deadline
The shift is particularly significant in SoftwareCW's home state. The U.S. SBA Office of Advocacy reports that Texas has 3.5 million small businesses employing 44.4% of the state's workforce. Many small offices went the route of perpetual Office licences to manage their costs. The end of support for Office 2021 is therefore adding a software line item to the 2027 technology budgets of small businesses throughout the state.

SoftwareCW Positions Plus as an Upgrade Path
SoftwareCW, an online software retailer founded in 2014, is positioning its SoftwareCW Plus membership as an upgrade path for Office 2021 users. Membership includes:
- 10 percent off all orders
- Software backups that can be re-downloaded after a computer upgrade, failure, or loss
- Priority customer support for installing and using purchased software

The first month is free, followed by $29.99 per month, and members can cancel, pause, or resume at any time. SoftwareCW Plus does not replace Microsoft security updates. It is designed to help buyers choose a supported version, install and activate it correctly, and keep it available when hardware changes.
SoftwareCW's Microsoft product pages currently have an average customer rating of 4.43/5 from 957 reviews.

"End of support doesn't break Office 2021 overnight, but it changes the math for everyone who bought it to avoid a subscription," said Colton Wiles, founder and CEO of SoftwareCW. "Most of the questions reaching us now aren't about which version to buy. They're about moving to a new PC, activating correctly, and knowing the license is legitimate. Plus, it was built for that part of the upgrade, so customers buy once and keep their software available when their hardware changes."

Outlook for the 2027 Software Upgrade Season
SoftwareCW expects upgrade demand to build through its January to April peak season (driven by tax prep and new year budgets). A successor perpetual Office release is very much expected in late 2026/2027, so some customers may be considering whether to wait or whether to upgrade now. SoftwareCW has published an Office 2021 end of support guide which compares M365, Office 2024, and the various alternatives.
