2025/2026 HAWAI‘I GREEN BUSINESS AWARDS PROGRAM HONORS LOCAL BUSINESSES AND EVENTS FOR SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES

HONOLULU —The Hawai‘i Green Business Program (HGBP) recognized 51 Hawai‘i businesses and events last night for their commitment to energy and water efficiency, waste reduction, pollution prevention and community involvement, as well as cultural and natural resource preservation.

The 51 awardees representing five islands were recognized during the HGBP Awards ceremony at Capitol Modern: the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum. Hosted by the Hawaiʻi State Energy Office, the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, Hawaiʻi Energy and Hawaiʻi Gas, the awards program showcases the businesses advancing Hawaiʻi’s clean energy and sustainability goals, emphasizing energy efficiency as a key solution in accelerating Hawaiʻi’s move to renewable energy.

In 2025/2026, the energy efficiency measures of Hawaiʻi Green Business program awardees resulted in 493 million gallons of water saved, 2.9 million kWh of electricity saved, 237 tons of green waste diverted, 349 tons of waste recycled,155,765 therms (1 therm = 100,000 BTUs) of gas saved, a reduction of 454 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent in electricity per kWh and a reduction of 206 metric tons of CO2 equivalent in gas consumed.

Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism Director James Tokioka said, “A growing share of travelers actively choose destinations based on environmental and cultural responsibility. Visible sustainability commitments become competitive differentiators, not just goodwill gestures, supporting long-term sustainability. I applaud these businesses for their growing and ongoing commitment to conservation and change.”

Chief Energy Officer Mark Glick praised awardees for their commitment to sustain the ecological, cultural and economic health of Hawaiʻi, naming the visitor industry and supporting small business sector as crucial to meeting the state’s 2045 renewable energy and decarbonization goals, while building resilience in the face of recent storms and climate-related challenges.

“Building a resilient energy ecosystem in Hawaiʻi, particularly in the face of recent climate threats, is critical to maintaining a healthy economy,” said Glick. “The contributions of the businesses and organizations we recognize today honor a statewide commitment to malama ʻāina — to steward our precious natural resources for future generations.”

Glick added: “Diversifying energy resources, whether through generation, battery storage, recycling, energy and water conservation, or long-term investment in resource management, is a shared public-private sector commitment and has a profound impact on our ability to thrive in our island home.”

The commemorative plaques for this year’s green business awards were constructed utilizing reclaimed wood from a Nawa tree planted with Queen Emma that fell approximately 10 years ago. The reclaimed wood has been utilized for many projects, including the Queen’s Medical Center conference tables, benches, cutting boards, utensils and these plaques.
