Iraq Warns Baghdad Airport Strikes May Endanger High-Risk Prison
In a statement posted on Telegram, officials said that the area surrounding the airport and the Al-Karkh Prison has faced repeated strikes over the past several days, with Sunday seeing the heaviest bombardment.
“The most intense attacks occurred today, with six strikes occurring between 6 p.m. and now, some of which landed very close to the prison," the ministry said. "This raises concerns about the potential impact on the security of the prison, which houses highly dangerous terrorist inmates.”
The ministry’s warning comes amid heightened regional tensions following coordinated strikes by Israel and the United States on Iran on Feb. 28, which reportedly killed around 1,200 people, including the country’s then-supreme leader Ali Khamenei.
In retaliation, Tehran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military installations. These attacks have caused casualties and disrupted infrastructure in the affected regions, according to reports.
