Trump criticizes CNN, NYT over ‘demeaning’ attacks on Iran

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticized CNN and The New York Times, accusing them of undermining the effectiveness of recent American airstrikes on Iran. His comments came after both outlets reported that initial intelligence assessments suggest the strikes caused only limited damage to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote in all caps: “FAKE NEWS CNN, TOGETHER WITH THE FAILING NEW YORK TIMES, HAVE TEAMED UP IN AN ATTEMPT TO DEMEAN ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL MILITARY STRIKES IN HISTORY. THE NUCLEAR SITES IN IRAN ARE COMPLETELY DESTROYED!”

According to CNN, a preliminary analysis by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) found that while the U.S. targeted key nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, the strikes likely only delayed Iran’s nuclear program by a few months. The report noted that Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile survived the attacks and that most centrifuges, critical for uranium enrichment, remained operational.

The New York Times echoed those findings, reporting that although entrances to two underground nuclear facilities were damaged or sealed, the core structures themselves remained intact. The newspaper also cited Israeli sources who believe Iran might operate undisclosed enrichment sites, which could keep its nuclear efforts going despite future strikes.

The military campaign began on June 13, when Israel launched preemptive strikes it claimed were meant to halt Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons development. Iran responded with retaliatory missile attacks, while denying any military dimension to its nuclear program. The U.S. later joined in with strikes involving B-2 bombers and Tomahawk missiles targeting fortified Iranian sites.

Despite both Tehran and Tel Aviv declaring victory, reports have questioned the strategic impact of the strikes. A ceasefire has since been implemented, and Iranian officials have expressed openness to resuming nuclear negotiations with the United States.
