Pentagon gives specifics regarding Iran attacks
(MENAFN) U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth described the recent airstrikes on Iran as an “incredible and overwhelming success,” claiming they effectively destroyed Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Speaking at a major press briefing Saturday evening alongside General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Hegseth outlined details of the operation—codenamed “Operation Midnight Hammer.”
“The president gave us a focused and powerful directive,” Hegseth said. “We targeted Iran’s nuclear infrastructure—not its military forces or civilian population—and eliminated their nuclear ambitions.”
General Caine revealed that the coordinated strike involved over 125 aircraft, including seven B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, reconnaissance planes, refueling tankers, and fighter jets. He noted that to maintain strategic deception, a segment of the bomber formation initially flew west into the Pacific before redirecting toward the targets.
Just after midnight between Friday and Saturday, U.S.-based B-2 bombers released twelve 30,000-pound GBU-57 “bunker-buster” bombs on Iran’s Fordow and Natanz nuclear sites. Meanwhile, cruise missiles launched from a U.S. submarine struck the nuclear facility in Isfahan.
Caine emphasized that the mission was a showcase of U.S. global strike capabilities. “This operation spanned multiple domains and regions, demonstrating our ability to act with speed and precision anywhere in the world,” he said.
Hegseth also issued a stern warning to Iran, stating that U.S. officials had communicated—both publicly and privately—that any retaliation would trigger a forceful American response. “Any attack on U.S. interests or allies will be met with serious consequences,” he cautioned.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi condemned the strikes, calling them a clear violation of international law and treaties. He reiterated that Iran reserves all options to defend its sovereignty and people.
