Israel Engages in First Direct Ceasefire Talks with Hamas

(MENAFN) For the first time since the conflict began, Israel is reportedly engaged in direct discussions with Hamas regarding the potential conclusion of hostilities in the Gaza Strip, according to a media account.

A political figure familiar with the peace efforts disclosed on Saturday that Tel Aviv is holding negotiations aimed not just at prisoner exchanges, but at halting the ongoing war altogether. The report was shared by a news agency.

“This negotiation is different than the ones that brought about the previous deals,” the source noted, as reported by the news agency. Unlike earlier agreements that primarily focused on freeing hostages, this round of dialogue is centered on ceasing the conflict, making the overall process far more intricate.

“While the previous deals dealt with the release of the hostages … this deal touches on the issue of ending the war. Therefore, everything is interconnected. This is a very complex deal,” he explained.

The insider revealed that the suggested arrangement consists of a two-month truce during which ten living Israeli captives would be freed.

In that same period, comprehensive discussions would commence on finalizing the war’s conclusion.

The talks are said to delve into multiple interconnected issues, such as how the conflict might end or potentially persist, the future governance of Gaza, and the process for returning all remaining hostages.

According to the source, “Within the framework of the deal, there is an entire clause that deals with issues to be discussed regarding the end of the war. Both parties can add topics, and they will be discussed within the 60-day cease-fire.”

The political figure also mentioned that the Israeli team traveled to Doha with considerable authority and negotiation range.

He stressed that while there is ample room for flexibility in the talks, Israel's essential security priorities remain non-negotiable.

“The Israeli delegation embarked to Doha with a broad scope of action and a satisfactory mandate. There is enough flexibility to reach an agreement, without compromising on issues such as Israel's security needs,” the source stated.
